National Highways Authority (NHA) is state owned department and works under the Ministry of Communications. The National Highway Authority (NHA) maintains and operates all the national highways of the country.
National highways (NHA) are responsible for the development and care of national main roads and express waives. The NHA was created in 1991, by the parliament, for planning, development, operation, repair, and maintenance of national highways.
The entire length of roads under the NHA is 12000 which accounts for 47 of the full route web and takes 80% of Pakistan’s economical traffic. It is committed to providing safe, secure, modern, and efficient transport systems.
Highways and motorways of any country are of critical importance to its economic development. An economic system seems to develop and industrialize if a country’s transportation system is fast and efficient.
In 1947 transportation depended on roads was merely 8%, now it is more than 96% of inland cargo and 92% of rider traffic. NHA’s mission is to maintain and operate the national highway network.
It is working to minimize road transportation costs, provide driving comfort and safety to road users, and preserve the asset investment in roads.
In Pakistan transport routes are classified into four categories:
1. Motorways and National highways
2. Strategic rules
3. Provincial and district roads.
Motorways and national highways:
The national highways and motorways are supervised by the National Highway Authority (NHA).
Provincial roads:
Provincial roads are supervised by the provinces through their own highway systems.
District roads:
District roads connect small areas and provide access to villages and remote areas. The urban roads linked with the district which terminates at national highways.
Strategic routes:
Strategic routes not included in provincial or district roads, but serve the areas of strategic importance to the nation.
The selection procedure consists of an Application process (complete online application form), a Test, and an Interview. Selected candidates will go through training.
